Glad you liked it! I've heard ChaRles Bradley and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and, like you, I really enjoy the new manifestation of the old school soul vibe. Have you checked out Aloe Blacc? He's got some good stuff, too.

Love this tune. Love the contemporary use of the fabulous old-school sound. If you haven't already, you should check out Charles Bradley (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moiUyFQQE-0) and Lee Fields & The Expressions (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epu97rNb9F8)...really amazing stuff. They don't feel 'retro'; they feel like really awesome songs that come out of the soul tradition. Bettye Lavette and Sharon Jones, too. All of it is vastly preferable to the horrid Joss Stone, who is simply one of the worst singers I've ever heard.

I initially posted the original Monkey Time with a great montage from Planet of the Apes, but YouTube disabled the channel where it resided. So I posted the hip cover version, instead. What amazes me about Boulle is how DIFFERENT his two famous novels are. One is a study of society through sic-fi high adventure, and one explores the absurdity, madness, humanity and futility of war. A neat trick, that.

Love Planet of the Apes. Interestingly enough, Pierre Boulle did NOT write the screenplay for Bridge on the River Kwai. That was done by two blacklisted writers - Carl Foreman and Michael Wilson, Since they could not be credited, the producers just credited Boulle, whom they never met. I believe about 10 or so years ago, Foreman and Wilson were finally given credit for the script. One of my very favorite movies.

I like this version of Monkey Time, but it doesn't really hold a candle to the Major Lance one, since that was written, produced and played by the super-uber-ever-great Curtis Mayfield, a true titan, with vocal help from The Impressions. I might even sound good in that company.

I know the Hollies-style "He Ain't Heavy" vibe isn't your thing, but this one has a nice Moody Blues feel to it. And the melancholy-rising-to-majestic melody is undeniable. Which song outdoes this one for lush poppiness? As far as it being gone for good, I agree for the most part. But there are some indie acts that get away with it.

I like this song a lot. It suggests some of the overwrought "lush" pop of the era that I can't stand (Worst That Could Happen, that kinda thing) without sounding affected. Good tune. I hear a more postmodern (that is, less 'earnest') type of lushness in Radiohead, Arcade Fire and Flaming Lips that I really enjoy but I think you're right in assuming that this kind of approach may be gone for good.

I'm glad you liked it. We just got our blog up and running and will be tweeking it this week. Then I'll try to get a little bit of attention from discriminating pop music fans by jumping up and down and waving my arms...or possibly through email. Your stuff was in our first post because it's the kind of music is what we aim to feature. Please continue making it.

Cheers,
